A Bucket List of Things to Eat in Europe

Trying out all of the different local drinks and foods in any place you’re visiting is one of the most important aspects of travel – if not THE most important. And when in Europe, there are so many things to eat since each place has its own unique cuisine to reflect the history and culture there.

If one of the first things that come to your mind when you go to a new place in Europe is “what’s the best thing to eat there?’ then this list has you covered!

Crepes in Paris
You can find street vendors all across Paris selling an array of sweet and savory crepes. You can have it filled with your choice of toppings with some of the most popular choices being cheese, andouille sausages, strawberries, cider jam, apricot ice cream, chocolate, and whipped cream. Just imagine enjoying the delicious treat while enjoying views of the Eiffel Tower… ah, Paris.

Stroopwafels from Amsterdam
Perhaps the best-known Dutch sweet, stroopwafels are basically two thin waffles that are stuck together with a layer of caramel. Street vendors usually send giant stroopwafels which are fresh and warm, but you can also get them at several local cafes and bakeries. Funnily enough, even the McDonald’s in Amsterdam serves its own version of a stroopwafel filled with McFlurry filling.

Fish and Chips in London
Fish and chips can be found in menus all over the world and is a popular choice with diners of all ages. But as you’ve most likely heard, London is famous for its fish and chips combination and its basically a staple in every restaurant and pub in town. Their version is often served with mashed peas that have been seasoned with salt and vinegar.

Paella in Barcelona
Though it’s not originally from Barcelona, the city has gained a reputation for serving some of the best paellas in the world. Paella is a traditional Spanish rice dish that is hearty and delicious. It’s often made with a combination of veggies and seafood, though you can sometimes find meat replacements.

Chimney Cakes in Budapest
Chimney cakes are a mouthwatering sweet concoction and after you have your first one, you’re definitely going to want more. The pastry is first spun on a rotisserie, rolled in sugar, and then baked over charcoal – which adds a unique flavor. The fluffy cake and its sugary crust are usually topped with chocolate shavings, cinnamon sugar, or walnuts.

Gelato in Florence
This rich and creamy Italian treat will convert you from an ice cream fan to a gelato fan with just one lick. Gelato has been served in cafes, shops, and by street vendors all over Florence since before World War II and is considered a national treasure. It’s the perfect refreshing treat to have while taking a break from sightseeing and should not be missed!

Currywurst in Berlin
Found in streetside stands and restaurants all across the city, currywurst is a dish comprising fries topped with a bratwurst and curry ketchup sauce. You might be put off if you’re not used to having such rich toppings on your fries, but do not let that stop you from trying this dish. The rich flavors will take over your mouth and you’ll thank us for it later.

Waffles in Brussels
If you didn’t know already, waffles were created in Brussels – they’re not called Belgian waffles for jokes. You’ll find it at corner stands and restaurants all over so be sure to try one. They’re nothing like the waffles you’re used to back home but are instead larger, lighter, and crisper than anything you’ve ever had before.
